Rules

Objective

Crazy Eights is a race to empty your hand. The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the round. Everyone else scores penalty points for the cards they're still holding. Those penalty points add up across rounds, so the real goal is keeping your total low.

The deal

Four players each get 5 cards from a standard 52-card deck. The rest of the deck goes face down in the middle as the stock. Its top card is flipped face up next to it to start the discard pile. If that first card happens to be an 8, it's shuffled back into the deck and a new card is turned up. Play moves clockwise from the dealer.

The play

On your turn you play one card onto the discard pile. It has to match the top card's suit or its rank, unless it's an 8. The 8s are wild, so you can play one on anything. When you do, you name the suit the next player has to follow. If you have no playable card, you draw one card from the stock. If it fits, you play it right away, and if it's an 8 you name the suit. If not, your turn ends. When the stock runs out, the top discard stays in place and the rest of the pile is shuffled to make a new stock.

Scoring and winning

The round ends the moment someone plays their last card. Everyone else counts up the cards left in their hand. Each 8 costs 50 points, face cards cost 10 each, Aces cost 1, and number cards count their face value. New rounds are dealt until a player reaches 100 points. The game ends right there and the lowest total wins. If two or more players tie for the lowest total, they share the win.

How to win at Crazy Eights

Crazy Eights looks simple, but smart play wins far more rounds than luck does. The two big skills are timing your 8s and keeping the discard pile on suits your opponents can't follow.

Managing your 8s:

• Don't burn an 8 early just because you can. Save it for a turn where nothing else fits or to set up your final cards.
• Don't sit on an 8 too long either. If another player goes out while it's still in your hand, it costs you 50 points. When someone looks close to going out, spending your 8 beats eating the penalty.
• When you call a suit, pick one you hold several of. That way your next turn is already covered.
• Calling a suit that hasn't shown up much works too. Opponents who don't hold it are forced to draw.

Playing:

• Keep a mix of suits and ranks as long as you can. A hand stuck in one suit goes quiet the moment the suit changes.
• Every forced draw tells you something. A player who draws on hearts probably has none, so steering the pile back to hearts hurts them again.
• Watch everyone's card counts. When an opponent is down to their last card or two, switch away from the suits they've been playing comfortably.
• Shed your Kings, Queens and Jacks when you get a good chance. At 10 points each, they sting when a round ends suddenly.
• Near the end of a round, hold cards that match what's been landing on the pile recently. It raises the odds you can play on your next turn.

What happens when I play an 8?

An 8 can be played on any card. After you play it, you choose the suit the next player must follow. The trade-off is the scoring. An 8 caught in your hand when someone else goes out costs you 50 points, so they're powerful but risky to hoard.

What if I can't play a card?

You draw one card from the stock. If it matches the top of the discard pile or is an 8, you must play it right away. For an 8, you choose the suit. Otherwise your turn ends and play passes on. You never draw more than one card per turn.

Do I have to play a card if I can?

Yes. Drawing is only for turns where nothing in your hand can be played. If you hold any 8 or a card that matches the suit or rank of the top card, you have to play.

How do I play Crazy Eights with friends?

Host a private table and invite your friends. Click the round yellow Play button at the table's top left to open the Play menu. Choose "Host table", turn on "Private table" and type a table name. At your new table, click "Invite players" and copy the link for your friends. Friends can also choose "Join private" in the same menu and type the same name.

Can I play Crazy Eights against the computer?

Yes. This page starts you in a game against three bots right away, which is a good way to learn the game before facing live players. For another game, click the round yellow Play button to open the Play menu and choose "New game".
